Apparel Construction Syllabus

(4 weeks -3 days/week)
Students learn the basics of sewing: Seams, Seam Finishes, Darts, Stitches, Binding, Hem Tape, Bastings, Catch Stitching, Industrial Equipment, Zippers, Textiles

(4 weeks-2 weeks shift dress, 1 week 1st skirt, 1 week 2nd skirt)
Learn the basics of sewing by completing 3 different projects.
(1) Shift Dress, (2) A-Line Skirt with Facing, (3) Gathered Skirt with Waistband

(3-4 weeks)
Details: learn the basics of home decor by completing various projects.
Cushions, Pillows, Welting, Zippers, Cutting and Window Treatments.

(1-2 weeks)
Students will learn the basics of textiles by examining specific fabrics and their various elements. Students will receive a basic understanding of weaving and fabric performance properties.

(2 weeks per garment, 4 weeks total)
Learn the basics of traditional formal wear. An elevation of basic garment construction to create a more complex formal wear. Students will learn the foundation of catch stitching and the mock Hong Kong seam finish.
Button-Up dress shirt – Tailored Trousers – Pencil Skirt

( 2-4 weeks)
Learn the basics of garment alterations by completing various projects. These projects can include but are not limited to hem alterations, jacket sleeve shortening, repair patches, tailored pant alteration, strap shortening, and more.

(2-3 weeks)
Learn the basics of understructures, boning, gromments, and how they work together to create structural garments.
Fully Lined and Boned Bustier

(3 weeks per garment, 6 weeks total)
Learn the basics of hand stitching couture dressmaking. Construct 2 dresses incorporating previously learned skills, couture stitches and higher-level seams and seam finishes.
Strapless Bustier Dress – Princess Seam Dress

(4-6 weeks)
Learn tailoring basics, tailoring hand stitches, jacket layers, build up, hair canvas, lapels, shoulder pads, and notched collars.

(2 weeks)
Using previous class work, student will assemble a well-rounded portfolio that can be used for applying for jobs or colleges. Each portfolio will be tailored to students' goals and ambitions.
